Update - Western Mass Shooting: Infant Dies Shortly After Birth, Mom In Critical Condition

An infant died shortly after being delivered following a Hampden County shooting just before 1 p.m., Wednesday, Oct. 4 in in Holyoke at the intersection of Maple and Sargeant Streets.

A pregnant woman was transported to a nearby hospital in critical condition. The infant, who was delivered, and needed life-saving medical services, tragically died, according to the Hampden District Attorney’s Office,

All involved suspects are believed to have been identified and transported to nearby hospitals and are in custody, the DA's Offoce said.

According to Holyoke Police, 911 operators received multiple calls for help along with notifications from ShotSpotter of a shooting in the area of Maple and Sargeant streets.

State Police said multiple patrols, K9 teams and investigative units were deployed to assist Holyoke Police with the investigation into and search for suspects from a shooting in the area of 397 Maple St.

"The shooting is believed to have stemmed from an altercation among several people," according to state police. "There is not believed to be any ongoing threat to the public."

A preliminary investigation indicates that one of the victims was on a bus that was passing through the area, state police said, noting that the investigation is ongoing under the direction of the Hampden County District Attorney’s Office.
